The Norwood Scale
When analysing the level of hair loss at our Shadow Scalp Wales SMP clinic in Swansea, to determine the appropriate level of treatment we use the Norwood Scale (or Hamilton-Norwood scale). It is well recognised and is the leading classification system used to measure the extent of male pattern baldness. Men typically lose their hair in one of several common patterns over the course of many decades. This scale provides easy-to-reference images that indicate different stages of balding.
The Norwood Scale has 7 stages:

Price Guide
(A full consultation is required for a definitive quote)
Stage 01
- No significant hair loss or recession of the hairline.
Stage 02
- There is a slight recession of the hairline around the temples. This is also known as an adult or mature hairline.
Stage 03
- The first signs of clinically significant balding appear. The hairline becomes deeply recessed at both temples, resembling an M, U, or V shape. The recessed spots are completely bare or sparsely covered in hair.
Stage 03 (Vertex)
- The hairline stays at stage 2, but there is significant hair loss on the top of the scalp (the vertex). resembling an M, U, or V shape. The recessed spots are completely bare or sparsely covered in hair.
Stage 04
- The hairline recession is more severe than in stage 2, and there is sparse hair or no hair on the vertex. The two areas of hair loss are separated by a band of hair that connects to the hair remaining on the sides of the scalp.
Stage 05
- The two areas of hair loss are larger than in stage 4. They are still separated, but the band of hair between them is narrower and sparser.
- There is slightly more work required than in stage 04.
Stage 06
- The balding areas at the temples join with the balding area at the vertex. The band of hair across the top of the head is gone or sparse.
Stage 07
- The most severe stage of hair loss, only a band of hair going around the sides of the head remains. This hair is usually not dense and may be fine.

FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions will I require?
Treatment is usually performed over 3 separate sessions and this is the number of sessions included in your quote. Session 1 usually takes around 3-5 hours, this is the longest session. Session 2 will then be 2 weeks after the first. Session 3 will take place after 4 weeks
Is SMP the same as a tattoo?
No. SMP can be referred to as a hair tattoo but the treatment is performed using a completely different technique to regular tattoos. The needles and equipment we use are also different to those used for regular tattoos.
How long will SMP last?
SMP is a Permanent hair loss solution but will require top-ups usually from around 3-5 years . How often you require top-ups depends on various factors such as your immune system, how you look after your treatment, and UV exposure. With the correct aftercare this can prevent you from needing a top up sooner. Some clients may require top-ups at 3 years. Some may not need a touch up. It really does differ from person to person.
Will anyone be able to tell I have had this treatment done?
This treatment has such a natural look to it that unless you tell people, they will have no clue! It actually makes someone balding look younger.
What does the treatment involve?
Carried out with a micro needle, carbon based pigment is inserted into the upper dermal layer of the scalp. Normally 3 – 4 sessions are required for a complete transformation with each session lasting 2 – 4 hours (depending on how much pigmentation is required). Results however will be totally visible from your first session. The instant natural results will have people questioning what is different about you without it being glaringly obvious.
Is SMP Painful?
SMP would not be described as a painful treatment but may cause some discomfort in certain areas (this being the hairline mainly). On a scale of 1-10 it’s reported to be level 3-4, not bad aye! Most feel no pain at all and even have a snooze whilst the procedure is being done!
What is the treatment aftercare?
There is no downtime following this procedure. You will be completely fine to go about your daily routine aside from working out really heavily or being in the sun directly for a few days. Following this aftercare advice ensures your get the best results from your treatment.
For the first 4 days after each treatment :
* Do not exercise or excessively sweat. Excessive sweating of the scalp can damage the pigmentation. The scalp will also be sensitive during this time and water or sweat can result in irritation. (Normal exercise can resume 10 days after treatment).
* Not to get your scalp wet, or wear any hats. (After the 4 days you can wash your head).
* Moisturise scalp from day 4, this will help your scalp during the healing process.
* Avoid swimming, swimming pools, saunas, steam rooms and tanning beds.
A full set of aftercare instructions will be given to you after your first treatment.
